Foreign founder additional docs. Non-US principal requires a notarized passport copy + ITIN (or SSN). ITIN application (Form W-7) can take 7–11 weeks by mail, or same-day via IRS Acceptance Agent. If no ITIN: use a US co-founder's SSN for EIN, or apply via phone (IRS international: +1 267-941-1099) for faster processing.

OFAC sanctions check — blocking event. Stripe and Mercury both run OFAC screening automatically. If flagged (name/address overlap with sanctions list), the account freezes and manual review takes 5–30 business days. Mitigation: apply with full legal name exactly as on government ID; avoid P.O. box addresses; use a US residential or registered-agent address.
